LORRAINE CALCULLI

Story: When I first began studying Russian Literature and language, I never thought I would be involved in a production about Mediterranean life, but being a grandchild of southern Italian immigrants my heritage caught up with me. I basically grew up surrounded by my father's drumming and his Italian folk traditions. I studied southern Italian frame drum and ritual dances with percussionist/singer Alessandra Belloni both in the US and Italy as well as performing with her in Woodstock and New York City @ the Cathedral of Saint John the divine and the Open Center. In addition I appeared with her group I Giullari di Piazza at the Caramoor Music Festivals.

Lorraine and MNE: I met Nicola during one of my performances with Alessandra Belloni and I Giullari di Piazza and he invited me to join his group for the upcoming performance of "Mediterranean Voices" at Club La MaMa. I am honored to be part of MNE and look forward to our next commitment.
