DIMITRIS ISSARIS
Country: GREECE
Composer
Story: In my native Greece, I studied at Athens University where I
graduated whit a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Musicology. In 1999 I came
to the United States to study at New York University from which I received
a Master's Degree in Music Composition in September 2001. As a classical
guitarist, I played in numerous venues including a performance at
Hammerstein Ballroom In NYC. I enjoy private teaching for which I have
over 8 years of experience.
Career: As a composer I cover a wide variety of genres, from orchestral
movie scores to television commercials. I composed music for various
foundations worldwide, including the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation,
the New York Foundation of the Arts ("Mediterranean Voices,") the Euro-
American Women's Council
(www.eawc.org) and the International New
Music Consortium. I have been published by DSM Producers NY, Inc. and
Wild Whirled Music, Inc. My music has also been used for several
independent movies and television documentaries, most recently for
NBC's "Saturday night live" and PBS "Visions of Greece".
Dimitris and MNE: I first met Nicola Iervasi in the summer 2000 when he
choreographed and performed on the music I was presenting for the
Composers Forum Series at NYU. After becoming friends, we discover the
common desire to represent - in a contemporary way - the customs and
the rhythms of our common Mediterranean traditions. We started by
sharing our ideas and material; influencing each other's work, and after
tireless rehearsals to respect before-soon deadlines, Mediterranean Voices
was born. For this production my music blends different musical elements,
deriving mainly from the folk Mediterranean tradition (5/8, 7/8 rhythmical
patterns, modal melodic material, etc.) and different musical idioms of
western music (neo-classicism, post-romanticism, musical theater, etc.).
In Addition to the NYU's Loewe Theater I performed with MNE fro the
international choreographic festival Dancing Planet at The Stable.
